Made in response to Samuel Getachew’s piece in the Washington Post: You shouldn’t need a Harvard degree to survive bird watching while black. Black people don’t owe anyone exceptionalism just to get respect — or to live. I use the cyanotype process to depict a figure alight with flowers (Foeniculum vulgare, Alchemilla mollis, and Hydrangea macrophylla). The original cyanotype is held in the collection of the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield, MA.
The cyanotype is an alternative photographic process used by botanist Anna Atkins to make the first ever photographic book. The process is straightforward and encourages experimentation. Sign-up for my newsletter for information about the cyanotype workshops I teach.
